New Summer 2025 Intern Spotlight: Sarah Afromsky

Meet Sarah Afromsky, one of Volunteer Lawyers for Justice’s incredible new interns joining us for Summer 2025. Sarah is a 2L at Rutgers Law School—Newark and a proud graduate of Lafayette College, where she double-majored in History and Government & Law. Her journey to VLJ began when she applied for the Maida Public Interest Fellowship at Rutgers Law. Yet, it was the strong Rutgers-to-VLJ pipeline—filled with passionate professors, staff, and alumni—that confirmed her interest in the organization.

This summer, Sarah will be supporting VLJ’s Children's Representation Program, Debt Relief Legal Program, and New Jersey Survivors Justice Project. Throughout her internship, Sarah is eager to gain meaningful client-facing experience and hopes to leave a tangible impact on people’s lives. Whether through sharing legal knowledge, advice, or helping clients secure a bit of relief in a difficult moment, Sarah looks forward to supporting our clients through her passion for advocacy.

Although this is Sarah’s first formal pro bono experience, she’s already feeling the contagious energy in the power of pro bono. Sarah shared, “Even though I just started at VLJ, every member of the staff shares a passion for helping people and for pro bono work as a whole.” On the nature of VLJ’s pro bono work, she offered, “This welcoming environment just shows how amazing it can be to help people who oftentimes have unequal access to justice due to their economic position.” For Sarah, VLJ’s mission is not just about access—it’s about dignity. “VLJ’s mission is inspiring to me because it emphasizes the fact that poverty should not be one’s identity, but something that people are currently experiencing. It is also inspiring because VLJ’s mission models a group of individuals who passionately believe in helping others have equal access to justice.”

We are excited to have Sarah with us this summer and look forward to witnessing the tremendous impact she’ll have—at VLJ and beyond—ensuring access to justice. Welcome, Sarah!
