Celebrating VLJ’s August 2026 Volunteer of the Month
For Heidi I. Hansen, Chair of the Tax Practice Group at Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC, sharing her legal skills with communities that might not be able to afford them isn't simply a professional duty, it’s a powerful way to turn peace of mind into reality.
Since beginning her pro bono journey with Volunteer Lawyers for Justice in 2024, Heidi has donated more than 75 hours helping clients prepare for the future. Because of Heidi’s compassionate and enthusiastic approach to pro bono, and perfectly timed for Make-A-Will Month, we proudly celebrate her as our August 2026 Volunteer of the Month.
A graduate of Weber State University, Rutgers Law School (Juris Doctor), and New York University School of Law (LL.M. in Taxation), Heidi’s practice at CSG Law focuses on complex estate planning, gift tax planning, and estate administration matters. She assists individuals, businesses, and estates with tax audits, litigation, and she frequently collaborates with white collar defense attorneys in defending criminal tax matters. Adding to her impressive resume, Heidi counsels nonprofit organizations with formation and other emerging legal needs, including lending her time and talent to Pro Bono Partnership. Heidi has been recognized by Chambers USA, New Jersey Tax (2022-2026) and The Best Lawyers in America, Tax Law (2024-2027); Trusts and Estates (2025-2027).
As one can easily imagine, Heidi is a tremendous help to VLJ and our clients, from those who served in the United States Military to residents of Newark’s South Ward. Guided by a joy of giving back, Heidi’s volunteerism really shines because of her connection with those she serves; she shared this anecdote about what that connection really looks like:
"We assisted a veteran with his estate plan, and we got to know him and his partner. A few months after everything had been completed, his partner called to say that they had gotten married. We were so happy for them, and it meant a lot to us for them to share their happy news with us."
Whether navigating complex tax matters at CSG Law or working with neighbors experiencing poverty on a plan to age with security and stability, Heidi's advice to those considering pro bono is simple: "Jump in! It is very rewarding to give back to your community."
