Volunteer Lawyers for Justice  participated in a special movie screening and panel discussion for “Just Mercy” on Dec. 17, 2019 at CityPlex 12 in Newark. The film is based on the memoir by Bryan Stevenson , founder of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama. The panel discussion focused on criminal justice reform and reentry issues. Panelists were VLJ Executive Director Cathy Keenan , Newark Mayor Ras Baraka , New Jersey Institute for Social Justice Executive Director Ryan Haygood and Dennis Porter , founder and president of Prodigal Sons & Daughters Redirection Services. Janet A. Dickerson , CEO of Human Impact Solutions, moderated. Keenan said in a statement: “VLJ was honored to be part of such a powerful event and to work with such inspiring leaders. We all heard the clear call to action to work together and fight for justice for the most vulnerable members of our community.”
